These are business card–sized cards made from Tozan Washi, a traditional Japanese paper that has been crafted for over 800 years in Higashiyama Town, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. According to tradition, Tozan Washi originated in the late Heian period when survivors of the Fujiwara clan, defeated by the Kamakura forces in Hiraizumi, settled in the area and began making paper for daily use alongside farming.
Made from kōzo (mulberry) bark fibers, this paper is exceptionally strong and was historically used for official documents, scriptures, and books requiring long-term preservation, making it a representative type of Japanese paper. Its natural mulberry color gives it a rustic, durable character.
The 50-card set comes in a charming, simple box. Notably, Matsuo Bashō’s famous travelogue Oku no Hosomichi was reportedly written on Tozan Washi cut into four sections.
