What is gold thread?
Gold thread is made by cutting Japanese paper on which gold leaf is pressed using lacquer as glue.

The process of pressing gold leaf, which is said to be as thin as 1/10,000 mm, is filled with the skill of craftsmen. The materials used to make the lacquer, gold leaf, and Japanese paper themselves have also been produced using techniques handed down from generation to generation by Japanese craftsmen.
Originally, they were used for Nishijin-ori, Kyoto's highest quality textiles that have been handed down for 1,600 years. However, due to the shrinking demand for kimono and the development of simplified production methods, there are now only a few craftsmen in the region who have inherited the traditional manufacturing methods.
What is Meisen?
Meisen is a type of kimono that spread throughout Japan from the latter half of the Meiji period (1868-1912) to the Showa period (1926-1989) and was loved by ordinary women as everyday wear and fashionable clothing. Meisen is mainly produced in the northern Kanto region. Kiryu, Ashikaga, Chichibu, Hachioji, and Isezaki. Isezaki Meisen" in Gunma Prefecture, where sericulture is said to have started in the Nara period (710-794), was one of the most widely produced, and was worn by one out of every ten women in Japan at that time.
The charm of Isesaki Meisen silk is the unique pattern and coloring produced by the "kasuri" technique. The weft and warp threads are woven one by one on a hand weaving machine. However, the meisen industry itself is currently in decline due to the shrinking kimono culture and lack of successors.
