This book contains approximately 550 canned food labels for domestic and export use printed from 1877 to the Showa period.
The labels depict a wide variety of foodstuffs, from fish, meat, crustaceans, fruits and vegetables to side dishes on the dinner table, and show the high level of design ability that was cultivated amid Japan's abundant food resources and international competition at the time.
The eccentricity and freshness of the outstanding design probably reflects the breath of the modern era of Japan.
Please enjoy the commercial designs of canned food labels of the past, which still have a fresh appeal decades after their creation.
