This Japanese soup bowl is made of Japanese zelkova wood, hollowed out on the potter's wheel. The outside is finished with a wipe lacquer finish that brings out the grain of the beautiful zelkova wood, and the inside has a strong rusty base. The contrast between the grain of the zelkova wood and the jet-black rust is a beautiful craft-like product. > Conventionally, the rusty lacquer (lacquer + polishing powder + ground powder + rice glue, etc.) used in the "basecoat" part of the lacquerware manufacturing process is applied only to the inside, where it is more susceptible to damage. This protects the base wood. This is because the inside is not only used to hold soup, but is also easily scratched by chopsticks. When hardened, the lacquer rusts almost as hard as stone.
