    Foil coloring hakuiro

    Foil Sai is a series created in collaboration with Miyawaki Urugian, a long-established shop in Kyoto, with the aim of offering the timeless values that remain with the Japanese people even as time passes by expressing the quality, beauty, and identity of the Kyo Sensu.

    Focusing on the fan surface

    The identity of Kyo Sensu, which has supported various artistic, Shinto, and Buddhist rituals.
    Using the traditional foil technique, which has been used to express the virtues of the Japanese people such as prayer, "Mono no ahare" (the beauty of things), "yugen" (the mysterious), and "wabi sabi" (the beauty of quiet and quiet), we have created a traditional and emotional expression, but with a design that is not old-fashioned, so it is in tune with modern life.

    All fan surfaces are processed with foil.
    If the fan has a large surface area, it would be too much for daily use and become a fan for decoration or dancing, but because the fan bone has a large surface area, the presence of the foil is just right and elegant.

    Special attention to the shape

    The 45-kan short-range shape is a type of silk fan originally developed in Spain and France.

    It can be said to be the latest form of Kyo Sensu, which has been updated in a uniquely Japanese way by combining the silk fan form and Kyoto's paper fan making techniques.

    The characteristics are that the large surface area of the bone allows for a gentle and supple breeze, and that it goes well with clothes.

    It is also made to fit the modern lifestyle.

    Characteristics of Kyoto fans

    A characteristic of Kyoto fans is the division of labor in the production system.
    Craftsmen with specialized knowledge and skills in the fields of fan bone, base paper, overglaze painting, foil stamping, folding, and tsukegake work together to produce better products.

    The techniques used to make the best use of the material by passing through the hands of specialized craftsmen are only possible in Kyoto, the production center of folding fans.

    In addition, by using Kyoto's fan mask processing techniques, which have long expressed the virtues and prayers of the Japanese people, as well as Noh and tea ceremony arts, Shinto rituals, festivals, and Buddhist ceremonies, we visualize the sense of fragility and the fragility of things within the emotional splendor that they convey.

    Tailoring by Miyawaki Urasengan
    The fan is tailored by Miyawaki Urasen-an, one of Kyoto's most famous and long-established tailors.
    Each part of the work, including the fan bone, folding, and attaching, is done by skilled craftsmen, and strict inspections are carried out to ensure the quality and service that are typical of a long-established company.

    Due to the characteristics of the bamboo and paper, it is best to store the bamboo and paper in a box with the seme attached when not in use, so that they will be ready for the next season in a beautiful shape.

    The Kyo Sensu has been associated with various traditional arts, Shinto rituals, and festivals, and has been influenced by the oriental virtues that they encompass.

    Our goal is to create products that bring a little richness to people's lives by expressing what Japanese people consider beautiful and cherish with a modern sensibility.

    Commitment to Products
    This activity started around 2015, when I started working as a foil stamping craftsman for Kyo-fusen around 2009, and I had acquired various skills and knowledge. At first, the output was simply, "Isn't it nice to make a fan using a traditional craft technique that is in decline?

    Through my activities, I began to think about what the essence of my craftsmanship was and what I could convey through other people's craftsmanship and overseas exhibitions.

    As a result, I thought that the Japanese virtues and prayers contained in arts, Shinto rituals, festivals, and Buddhist rites, as well as the foil-stamping technique of Kyo Sensu, were the traditions that should really be conveyed to the modern age. The current brand concept [Kyo Sensu, which expresses Japanese identity] was arrived at.
